BBB and Dateline expose Air Duct Cleaning Scams

Dateline NBC is looking into a local duct cleaning company. They've teamed up with the North Alabama Better Business Bureau.



The BBB started looking into the Pure Kleen company after spotting a newspaper ad for air duct cleaning services. The ad offered high dollar services for the bargain basement price of $79.95 and a free mold inspection. Workers would then tell the alleged victims they had mold in their homes.



The company started operating in Huntsville in April 2009 but shut down within a year after dozens of complaints were filed.



"We hope that a law enforcement agency will get involved and help stop this. As you can see there are many victims throughout the U.S.," said Michele Mason, North Alabama BBB.



BBB president Michele Mason is still actively investigating this air duct cleaning scam. Dateline NBC will feature this investigation on Sunday


This Sunday, January 9th at 6pm, with the help of Better Business Bureau, Chris Hansen (former host of To Catch a Predator) and Dateline NBC’s hidden cameras take a special look into a nationwide ring of air duct cleaning companies.




This scam– one that has thrived for more than a decade– cons thousands of consumers out of millions of dollars, and targets one of the most vulnerable segments of the population: the elderly.



BBB and Dateline discovered that many air duct cleaning companies across the country are using advertising tricks, such as the infamous “bait and switch,” promising a low price for the service, only to raise it once in the door.



Using hidden cameras, viewers will be able to watch what happens as Dateline volunteers call one of the companies. Dateline says viewers will be surprised and offended, as these air duct cleaners take their volunteers to the cleaners, but the technician will be in for a surprise when Dateline shows up to expose them
